September 23rd Newsletter

Dear Parent(s)/Guardians(s) and Students:

It is hard to believe, but another week is in the books, drawing us closer to the end of September and our first full month of school.  Though this week was not packed full of exciting events, it was another week of great faith and educational value for our students and instruction and leadership from our staff.  However, next week brings a number of activities and events to our Blue Family, including Freshman and Sophomore Retreats, the Rotary Senior Walking Tour of Delphos, Seniors Taking an ACT here at school, and the beginning of our Festival Dinner Ticket Sales.  What a great time to be a Blue Jay.

We are blessed and honored this week to welcome back Alum (Class of 1998) Paul Krendl, the world traveling Illusionist, known as Krendl.  Anytime we have an opportunity to welcome back Alumni and share with our students that working to achieve your dreams can be a reality, is a learning tool that cannot be replicated in the classroom.  Krendl is in town to perform two shows on October 2, sponsored by the Optimist Club.  More details are attached below.

Notes from Nurse Jean
Just a reminder that the policy for St. John’s is that students may return from an illness after they have been 24 hours free of vomiting, diarrhea, or elevated temperature.  Please keep this in mind before sending your child back to school.  We have had several cases of gastroenteritis, which includes vomiting and diarrhea.  If they return too soon, reoccurrence of symptoms and increase risk of spread of the virus through the school occurs.  We ask you please make sure your children are recovered completely before returning them to school.

Empowered Through Prayer

Let us enrich our own prayer life as well as others by sharing how we pray as well as learning new ways to pray.  Through this new ministry may we also come to feel empowered to make a difference in the world around us knowing who it is that gives us that courage and strength.  If interested please contact Mary Lou Pohlman at 419-303-8019 or email mlpohlman24@gmail.com.  Be prepared to give available days and times so that a time can be worked for everyone interested.

Financial Aid Meeting

A financial aid meeting has been scheduled for Monday, October 10, at 7:00 PM in the Delphos Jefferson Senior High School cafeteria.  This program is sponsored by the Delphos St. John’s and Jefferson guidance departments and will feature Mr. Chris Fowler, Director of Financial Aid at Bluffton University.  Mr. Fowler will explain the college financial aid process and how to fill out the various financial aid forms for all parents no matter where your child plans to attend college.  Financial Aid is constantly changing.  Mr. Fowler will be discussing all of the changes in financial aid, as well as how to complete the FAFSA, for the 2017-18 school year.  This program will be especially helpful for parents of seniors who will be attending college in the fall of 2017.

Homecoming Guidelines

The Homecoming Guidelines have not changed from last year.  The U.S. Bishops state that “as Christians we should dress in a modest manner, wearing clothing that reflect our reverence for God and that manifest our respect for the dignity of the liturgy and for one another.”  I do wish that you exercise modesty and sound judgments as you shop for dresses, this summer and fall.  I understand the challenges we face, adhering to our Catholic Faith while trying to shop in an environment that does not always share our beliefs.  However, know that your help is greatly appreciated in supporting the message that we work to accomplish together each day.

We hope everyone had a chance to enjoy Canal Days and support the Delphos community.  Our first full week of school is complete and it is hard to believe that we will be beginning our fourth week today.  This year is going fast, but we are accomplishing a lot.  Jostens helped our Seniors prepare for graduation, the underclassman the possibility of a class ring and we took school pictures on Thursday, and the coming weeks are no different.  Whether it be Retreats, Homecoming, Church Festival, or anything in between, the calendar is full of upcoming events.  Please remember, if you have a question about anything coming up or uncertain about anything, do not hesitate to call, email, or stop in the office, we want to help in any way we can, while ensuring everyone is informed and on the same page.  We are Blue Jays.

Dear Parent(s)/Guardians(s) and Students:

It was a short week, but it was a week of high temperatures and our first cancellation, tying the total, we had all of last year.  Though we only had three full days of education, I want to thank the staff for their dedication and determine to work through the heat while still working to provide the academic rigor necessary for our students to succeed.  I would like to thank the students for dealing with the heat in a professional and positive manner, knowing there is not much we can do, but working to make the best of the situation.  This is truly, what makes St. John’s so great.  Go Blue Jays.

As I am sure, some of you know we were thrown a second curveball this week, with the sudden resignation of our second Spanish Teacher this year, who we hired on Wednesday and resigned on Thursday.  I wanted to let all of you know that at this time we need to move forward with a decision that will benefit our school and students.  Moving forward with Spanish II and III…

We will be providing our students with a self-paced online course, provided by the Diocese, paid for by the school and parish, led by a teacher, and monitored by an individual in the classroom to help the students as much as possible while ensuring the students are working to complete their course.

Moving forward with Spanish I…

We do have some options available; however, I do not want to put the cart before the horse in providing what those options are.  If those options do not work, we will be looking to move all Spanish I students to another course, and providing them with Spanish I next school year.  Please pray that one of our options works out for the best.

In no way are these the dream scenarios we envisioned for the start of school, but pray that whatever decision is made is with the best intentions of the students and school in mind.  Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Dear Parent(s)/Guardians(s) and Students:

One week is in the books, and what a great week it was.  Having the students and staff back in the building is a breath of fresh air.  It will be a year of firsts, lasts, and opportunities, and we all look forward to growing together throughout the school year.  We are Blue Jays.

As I am sure, most of you know we were thrown a curveball this week, with the sudden resignation of our Spanish Teacher.  I wanted to let all of you know that this will not deter us from finding a solution to this issue for the coming school year.  At this time, this is where we stand moving forward..

We have an interview with a potential candidate scheduled for Tuesday.  However, we are not going to hire someone to simply fill a void, but someone that fits our parish and school family, while ensuring they are capable of challenging our students and allowing them the opportunity to expand their Spanish knowledge.  If this person cannot be found

Our second option will be to provide our students with a self-paced online course, provided by the Diocese, paid for by the school and parish, led by a teacher, and monitored by an individual in the classroom to help the students as much as possible, while ensuring the students are working to complete their course.  Taking time in early 2017 to leave no stone unturned looking in every possible corner to locate the best teacher for the 2017-2018 School Year for our students and family.

This is not the dream scenario we envisioned for the start of school, but pray that whatever decision is made is with the best intentions of the students and school in mind.  Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Dear Parent(s)/Guardians(s) and Students:

With the start of the new school year now only four days away, we in the Junior High/High School just wanted to extend our thanks to you for all of your support and dedication to the Blue Jay Family.  Our Parish and School is truly an amazing example of what can happen when everyone is working towards the same goals.  Without your support in the form of time, understanding, fundraising, donations, helping your student(s), supporting your parents, we would not be able to strive each day to improve our faith and academic excellence.  This shows exactly why St. John’s has graduated 101 classes, will look to graduate the 102nd this year, and many many more to come.  Thank you for everything and all you do.  We are all Blue Jays.

Attached below you will find the changes that have been made to the Student Handbook, the Teacher Supply List, Registration Information, Cross Country Information, Lunch Account, Homecoming Guidelines, Football Tickets, a 5K, and the Footwear Options for the Junior High.  Please remember that if you should have any questions, do not hesitate to call, email, or stop in the office, our goal is not to make this more challenging, but rather make your back to school shopping and transition to the 2016-17 school year as smooth as possible.

Junior High Footwear Dress Code

Below you will find the shoe selections for your Junior High student(s).  We highly recommend you purchase shoes from one of the options pre-selected for you from Shoe Carnival in Lima or Shoe Carnival online.  You can also order shoes at the store if they would be out of stock.  If you purchase shoes outside of these options, we cannot guarantee they will meet the uniform guidelines.  Which may result in disciplinary action.

If you have any questions the sales clerks at Shoe Carnival will have the list of the pre-approved shoes, please do not hesitate to ask.  We hope this makes it easier for our families with your back to school shopping and eliminates the questions as to what footwear is appropriate.

Shoe Carnival will be hosting a Catholic School shopping party event, which will be held on August 27.  Both days the store will be open 9:30 AM – 9:30 PM.  The customer will receive 30% off their in-store purchase, with the flyer below.  If they would be out of a specific shoe or size, they will order for you through the store and still honor the 30% discount along with free shipping to your home.  Be sure to check the Thursday ads in the newspaper for special offers and coupons.  Retail Me Not is a great app that can also provide a discount, visit Shoe Carnival online for printable coupons, or show your phone when checking out.  A $5.00 coupon is attached below.

The following question has been raised, “will these shoes be allowed for High School students,” and the answer is yes.  Not only will they be allowed for High School students this school year, Junior High students will be allowed to wear these options as they enter High School as well.

At this time, we are examining extending this policy to the High School for the 2017-18 School Year.  More details will follow at the end of the school year.

Dear Parent(s)/Guardians(s) and Students:

We are at the one-week mark before the start of school and are excited about the building coming alive again with the return of the students and staff, this past week with Registration.  We want to ensure you have all the information necessary to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Thank you for all of your help and support as we institute these changes.  Without your faith in St. John’s, we would not be able to accomplish our mission.  We look forward to seeing you soon.

St. John’s Junior High/High School Registration 2016-17 School Year

As you will notice there are no forms attached below in regards to registration materials, as you have seen in the past.  Information regarding our new online registration forms (OneView) will be emailed and mailed home to you in the near future.  This online registration is intended to encompass all forms that were completed by hand in the past, into a user-friendly, online portal, that you will have access to at all times, to make any changes necessary and gather other important materials that may be needed throughout the school year.  More information will follow.  We pray this takes away the burden of filling out forms in the future.

Online Lunch Account Payment System

This year we will be moving to an online system that allows you to place money on your student(s) lunch account, without the need to write a check or send money with them to school. The former option will still be available, including the convenience of paying online.  Again, like registration information, we hope this frees up a little time in your busy lives.  More information will accompany our OneView platform in the near future.
