Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s):
On Thursday and Friday (the 22nd and 23rd) the Seniors will be completing their Finals, with the Underclass taking theirs on May 28th through the 30th.
On the last day of school, Friday, May 30 we will have a 1:30 p.m. dismissal from St. John’s. Delphos City Schools will be in session until 3:00 p.m., so we WILL NOT have bus transportation available at the 1:30 p.m. dismissal. If your student(s) need bus transportation home at the regular time we will have staff available to supervise students until 3:00 p.m
As some of you may have heard, the Junior High and High School will be our Grading Scale, beginning next school year, which is attached below. Currently we have one of the lowest and least challenging grading scales in the Diocese and surrounding area. Jefferson being the only other school to use the same scale. Because of that, and the fact that at one time, we did have a 7-Point Grading Scale and there is no rhyme or reason why it changed, we feel it necessary to separate ourselves from the public school, be different, challenge our students, and better prepare them for their next step in life. With grade inflation becoming more and more common, many college admissions officials and scholarship committees are increasingly turning a skeptical eye toward many high school transcripts, due to that fact. However, we are looking to place our scale on a student’s transcript, to help disseminate between other schools and set our students apart and possibly in better standing.
When looking at a GPA/ACT Correlation Chart, used by many colleges and universities, our average GPA and our average ACT Score do not align as they should. With our GPA being higher than our ACT Scores.
Overall, this in no way is meant to cause anxiety or as I have heard “punish” students. It is my firm belief that a student does not strive for a 91%, but rather an A, and if the new scale is in place, I believe our students who want an A, will continue to work to achieve it, no matter where the bar is set.
I thank you for your support in backing this change. I know change can be difficult; however, I firmly believe this will be a change that will continue to move St. Johns forward academically, and benefit our students as they advance in further education or meaningful employment.
ACT Test Prep
Delphos St. John’s High School has decided to partner with Kaplan Test Prep before the end of the school year, and hopefully for the foreseeable future. Kaplan is an organization that has been in existence for 75 years providing students with Web-based, adaptive instruction based on individual learning needs to help students successfully prepare for college entrance exams. Students will have 24/7 access to self-paced, online ACT test prep amounting to approximately 50 hours of individualized cutting edge instruction with videos and multimedia activities.
An individual license through Kaplan would cost a student/family approximately $500. Partnering with Kaplan as a school allows our students to purchase a license for $29.00 per student. At this time, we are offering this to our current Juniors and will offer it to others after school starts in the fall.
